Private finance of roads in Hungary under continuous change
Article Abstract:
The Hungarian motorway toll system is funded through public and private investment but analysts suggest a mixture of both types of funding, for each project, would be preferable. The government's failure to advertise changes to the road system has led to the public being reluctant to pay motorway toll charges. The government has agreed to contribute to some roads, such as the M7/M70 motorway, to reduce toll charges. The authorities turned to private funding because they could not afford to maintain the 383km of motorways. Some 250km of motorway have been made into tolled roads.

On a roll: toll roads in the US
Article Abstract:
Significant developments are taking place in private highways in the US. There are now 15 states with legislation allowing public-private partnerships in transport infrastructure. There has been particularly strong growth in interest in high-occupancy toll lanes, which are lanes on existing motorways which can be used by vehicles with three or more passengers for no toll or by single-occupant vehicles for a toll. In terms of financing private construction of highways, it is becoming increasingly common to set up a non-profit corporation with access to tax-exempt debt.

Dulles Greenway enters twilight zone
Article Abstract:
The failure of the equity partners in Toll Road Investment Partners II, which operates the 14-mile Dulles Greenway toll road in northern Virginia, to make their quarterly interest payment has prompted concern about the future of the road, the first privately financed toll road in the US for more than 100 years. Some observers believe that the $358 million scheme could face foreclosure or that the company has been given a deadline to agree a grace period with creditors.
