Process-oriented architecture: Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners' sinuous glass and steel enclosures are the product of an architecture based on the processes of nature
Article Abstract:
The basis of a new architecture could be formed from learning about how structures in the natural world are formed and they processes they undergo. A process-oriented approach is sometimes seen in indigenous vernacular buildings, and Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners produce buildings that have and express the processes involved in their generation. The Waterloo International Terminal is an example of process-oriented architecture with an awareness of the limitations of glass in manufacturing and construction techniques. The process is further developed in the Eden project for bio-climatic glass houses in Cornwall, which in fact uses a transparent Teflon foil system.

Steel sector architectural committee
Article Abstract:
The UK steel construction industry set up an Architectural Committee within the Steel Construction Institute in 1995. Its aims included providing a forum for the exchange of ideas, developing educational aids and fostering international activities. The Committee has made progress in several areas in its first 18 months. Its activities have included production of a CD-ROM containing the Architectural Teaching Resource, research demonstrating the environmental and thermal mass properties of steel, and planning a Far East tour to demonstrate British steel design.

Structural steel
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom is noted as a world leader in the use of structural steel but research still needs to be done. The Steel Construction Institute Research Committee has given priority to areas like deep deck slim flooring, structual integration of services, facade retention systems and interaction between frames and lifts. Architects also require further information of the design of flat slabs and conncetions between steel and cladding materials.
