Processed foods, confectionery and bakery products in France
Article Abstract:
The French processed foods, bakery products and confectionery industry has been hit by weak consumer spending on food and drink, which is thought to have risen by only some 0.4% in 1994 and 1.1% in 1995. The brighter spots in the market include breakfast cereals, ice cream, frozen prepared meals, green beans and sweet corn, and condiments and sauces. Convenience foods have benefitted from the growing trend for consumers to spend less time cooking. Consumers are also turning away from basic foods with a high energy content, and towards more sophisticated foods.

Processed foods, confectionery and bakery products in the Netherlands
Article Abstract:
The Dutch processed foods, bakery products and confectionery industry was almost static in 1994-95, but there were wide variations between sectors. The meat products industry has been hit by several scandals in the meat industry, such as the UK BSE crisis, as well as by the general trend in many European countries to eat less meat. The savoury snacks, confectionery and bakery products market grew slightly in terms of value in 1994 and 1995, and make up some 10% of the food industry's total turnover.
