Computing for conservation
Article Abstract:
Computer aided design (CAD) software packages are particularly useful in many aspects of conservation work. They can be used to compile project information and are easily updated wherever required. Hand-drawn plans can be digitized through scanning systems to save time and money although they are sometimes more efficiently entered from scratch. Photogrammetry data can be digitized for CAD usage. Historical depictions of building layouts can be achieved with CAD layering. Other aspects of CAD software are discussed.

The integrated practice
Article Abstract:
Computer networking is gradually playing an increasingly significant role in architectural practice. Many practices are now looking to connect their various individual applications to create a fully integrated management system. These are based on a project-costing module, but can also handle a wide range of other tasks. It may be possible to design a standard system which would meet the requirements of small and medium-sized architectural design firms.

Choosing low-cost CAD
Article Abstract:
The cost of PCs able to run CAD software has fallen, and software costs have also fallen, with some available for around 500 pounds sterling. Autodesk has introduced AutoCAD LT to the low cost market which incorporates reference and tutorial manuals. Other software introductions include Cadvance and Caddie which includes a manual incorporating both basic commands and tutorial.
