Profits after pain
Article Abstract:
Swiss banks underwent a painful period of reorganization in 1996 as some of the industry's biggest names suffered heavy losses. Among them were the CS Group and Swiss Bank Corp, which registered losses of 2,432 and 1,955 million Swiss francs, respectively. Two other large banks, Union Bank of Switzerland and Volksbank posted losses, although on a smaller scale, at 348 and 250.9 million, respectively. Smaller Swiss banks fared better in 1996 with Raiffeisen, Zurich Cantonal Bank, Banque Cantonale Vaudoise and St. Gallische Kantonalbank and Berner Kantonalbank posting healthy profits.

A timely investment
Article Abstract:
The rare timepiece market is flourishing as auction houses that conduct watch sales in Geneva, Switzerland, may confirm. These auctions of rare timepieces and antique watches, usually held in April and May by institutions such as Sotheby's and Christie's, tend to focus on antique timepieces with unusual and complicated shapes. Gold watches from companies such as Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin can also command high prices, particularly if they are properly authenticated and are either unused, highly unique or previously owned by celebrities.
