Proposed transaction sparks bullish turn in Malaysian telecommunications sector
Article Abstract:
The Malaysian government's plan to restrict the entry of new companies into the country's telecommunications sector had caused many investors to reconsider investments in the sector when the plan was announced. However, Swiss Telecom's planned acquisition of 30% of Mutiara Telecommunications Sdn. Bhd. for $301 million has generated renewed interest among foreign investors. Stock analysts predict that stock prices for telecommunications companies will rise considerably as a result of the transaction.

In about turn, Malaysia drops plans to consolidate crowded telecom sector
Article Abstract:
The Malaysian government announced that it will no longer push through with its plan for the forced consolidation of the country's telecommunications industry. Malaysian officials had earlier stated that the industry should be rationalized to prevent overcrowding and that only three service providers will be allowed to operate. Observers attribute the policy reversal to legal issues and intense lobbying on the part of several telecommunications companies.
