Better reception in China: Murdoch makes a comeback with Phoenix Channel as ties thaw

News Corp is slowly making a comeback in China as evidenced by the sales convention its satellite-television channel Phoenix hosted at Beijing's Great Hall of the People. Rupert Murdoch, News Corp's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, had caught the ire of Chinese Communist leaders when he made bold predictions about the eventual collapse of totalitarian regimes with the help of satellite television. Murdoch has since worked hard to get Beijing's approval. News Corp formed partnerships with its Chinese counterparts to jointly operate Phoenix.

HBO's Hooks leaves legacy of success and the promise of new gains in Asia

HBO Asia Pres. William Hooks is set to resign his post to occupy a yet-to-be-announced position at HBO Asia's parent company. Under Hooks' five-year supervision, HBO Asia has increased its subscribership to about 1.2 million. The company also launched a second movie channel called Cinemax. Hooks revealed the HBO Asia plans to launch services in Vietnam, Burma and Mongolia by 1997.

HBO Asia, CCTV negotiate to bring locally tailored movie channel to China
Article Abstract:
HBO Asia is holding talks with state-owned television network China Central Television on setting up a partnership or a licensing agreement to distribute a locally tailored movie channel to China. The new services would be offered to Chinese homes, hotels and international housing facilities. Signing of the agreement would expand HBO Asia's foothold in the China market.
