Protection's stepchild: America's steel industry
Article Abstract:
The revamped US steel industry is in strong financial shape in the early 1990's. The industry benefited from the limits on foreign competition required by the voluntary export restraint agreements (VERS) of the 1980's, since the VERS gave the industry time to reduce costs and improve mill efficiency.

Supersteel's spot of rust
Article Abstract:
Tokyo Steel has been on the climb in the Japanese steel industry, maintaining a policy of growth while other companies have been downsizing. This policy may have caught up with it though, as the Nomura Research Institute has predicted it will lose money in 1993.
