Public flight path but shrinking sky
Article Abstract:
Lufthansa, Germany's national airline, which was the third largest passenger carrier in 1990, has been beset with economic problems since 1991. Over-expansion and stiff competition, as also, rampant price undercutting by American airlines on important transatlantic routes, are responsible for Lufthansa's losses. The German government has been negotiating with the US to get a better deal for Lufthansa. Apart form this, purchase of shares in a US airline, getting into the international courier business and undercutting of tarrifs on west European flights when European Community (EC) airline decontrol becomes operative in 1993 are some solutions that Lufthansa is looking at to get out of the red.

A fair wind blows for the fair trade
Article Abstract:
Germany is the world leader in organizing international trade fairs and exhibitions as 2/3 of the most prestigious ones are held there. Apart from promoting German exports, the trade fairs have also led to a demand, particularly in Asia, for German expertise in organizing such trade fairs. Japan's Tokyo International Convention Centre, opening in 1996, is likely to be a major venue for international trade fairs but the Germans should still remain far ahead in this field.
