The leading edge
Article Abstract:
Bavaria's economy remains diverse but its increasing concentration in electronics and telecommunications technologies have helped it lead Germany out of the 1993 recession. After contracting 1.3% then, the state's GDP rose 2.9% in 1994, second only to the small Rhine Palatinate. Bavaria's overall share of Germany's economy rose from 16% in 1970 to 19% in 1994, thanks chiefly to long-term structural changes in the Bavarian economy. It has 40% of Germany's aerospace industry and is a regional finance center.

A shift of emphasis
Article Abstract:
Germany's two-way trade with East Asia grew 10.1% in the past year, with exports up 17.2% and imports, thanks chiefly to the stronger yen, only 5.2% higher. Japan is still easily the top regional trade partner, followed by China and S Korea. Exports to the region, consisting largely of machinery, chemicals, and electrical equipment, rose 10% or more in 20 of the 24 countries. Annual direct investment is harder to track but increased from 357 million marks in 1989 to 636 million marks in 1993.
