Public opinion is a risky tool; anti-U.S. propaganda may restrict China's freedom of action
Article Abstract:
The loss of public confidence in communism as a ideology resulting from the decline of the Soviet Union has forced Chinese leaders to shift the resources of their vast propaganda machinery towards boosting nationalism. The Chinese media may have overreacted in attacking social problems in the US after China's human rights record was criticized by Washington. Continuing criticism may create an impossible climate in which the Chinese government can establish an amicable relationship with the US.

Clinton should set China policy
Article Abstract:
The US government has emphasised the importance of its relationship with China, stating that isolating China would not be of benefit to the US. It is now learning that it cannot force rapid changes in China in areas such as human rights, and is becoming more willing to deal with China as it is. However, the relationship is still fragile, and it is vital that growing public support is secured for improved relations between China and the US.
