Publishers in Taiwan shift their aim: restrictions in China leave Hong Kong's market fair game
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's publishing industry is finding a lucrative market for Chinese-language titles in Hong Kong, after finding the Chinese market lukewarm for their products. Many Taiwanese publishers are optimistic of their industry's potential in Hong Kong, due to the range of subject provided by Taiwan's diverse economy, unlike the limited subjects provided by Hong Kong's sole dependence on its services industry. While the Hong Kong market for printed matter is depressed, with the market experiencing a 1% drop in imports of printed matter, amounting to only $148.4 mil, Taiwanese publishers are still optimistic of capturing a significant market share since there are only 200 publishing houses in Hong Kong, compared to 5,000 in Taiwan.

Citizens lost in Vietnam: business as usual?
Article Abstract:
The US lost a powerful leverage in making Vietnam adopt democratic reforms with its decision to suspend the effectivity of the Jackson-Vanik amendment for Vietnam. The Jackson-Vanik amendment effectivily exempts a communist country from a 'most favored nation' trade status until its government institutes provisions to allow its citizens freedom to emigrate. The waiver of the Jackson-Vanik amendment would only encourage the Vietnamese government to continue it reign of terror on its citizens while enjoying advantageous trade status with the US.

Taiwan sees continued freedom as vital
Article Abstract:
Taiwan is expected to continue its growing political and trade relations with Hong Kong as long as the region retains its free economy and autonomy, as guaranteed by China. This relationship is sealed with the passage of the Statute Governing Relations with Hong Kong and Macau, where Taiwan reiterates its commitment to its cultural cousins, both in trade and political relations. Trade between Taiwan and Hong Kong has reached $28.7 bil in 1996, and Taiwanese investments in the region has amounted to $4 bil.
