Article Abstract:
Canon is one of a number of companies that have managed to perform well despite Japan's economic difficulties. It now derives 70% of sales and 30% of production from outside Japan, and is strongly committed to research and development. According to preliminary figures, profits rose by 40% in 1997 from 1996 to around Y83 billion, with net sales rising by 10% to Y1.6 trillion. However, the company will have to develop more extremely successful products if it is to continue growing at its current rate. Observers believe that there are no such products currently under development.
