Article Abstract:
United Kingdom prime minister, Tony Blair, has promised access to dentistry from the National Health Service (NHS) for everyone withon two years. There has been a drop in numbers of adults registered with NHS dentists to under half, or 19.7 million in 1998 from 24.8 million in 1993. This followed a reduction in dental treatment fees in 1992, which led to an increasing number of dentists refusing to accept new patients within the NHS. Some adults have no access to dental treatment at all. The General Dental Practitioners' Association argues that over half specialist treatments are not acceptable in terms of quality.
