Threats by India's Congress Party to withdraw support from the United Front, a coalition of minor parties formed to stop the plurality-holding Bharatiya Janata Party, is paralyzing the government at least in its financial reforms. Congress leader Sitaram Kesri's political ambitions are described.

Kesri withdrew the Congress party's support for the weak 13-party government coalition, which may cause it to fall and result in his being named new prime minister. The government of Deve Gowda was doing quite well, and its demise as a sacrifice for Kesri's ambitions, may bode ill for India.
