Foot in the door: Japan shuffles towards corporate accountability

Minority shareholders in Japan can now hold executives accountable for their actions should proposed changes to the country's commercial code be approved. Revisions proposed by the Ministry of Justice include lowering the cost of filing stockholders' derivative lawsuits and reducing the size of holdings needed to gain access to company accounts. Large companies would also be required to appoint an in-house, independent auditor.

Article Abstract:
Japan has expressed much concern regarding the soaring pricesof imported wood and other lumber products. Despite weak demand, prices continue to rise at an alarming rate. This observation has prompted many traders to predict that a substantial number of plywood makers and timber-processing firms will go out of business. Wood industry officials have attributed the high prices to global efforts at environmental protection.
