Putting the bounce back into Matsushita
Article Abstract:
Matsushita faces a profit squeeze as a result of a drop in demand for the company's products, and deflation. The company has introduced a stock buy-back program and has carried out some restructuring, but the major change has been in the way that employees are paid. Large Japanese companies often provide welfare and housing services provided by the state or individuals elsewhere. Matushita is offering three choices, with lower levels of company benefits offset by higher pay. Performance is also to be reflected in pay as well as seniority.
