Quality defaults and work-in-process inventory
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the interactions between quality defaults and work-in-process inventory (WIP). A model was developed in which defects from one station can be detected only in the next station. The basic assumption was that defective item arrivals are Markovian, and that defective items are reworked or replaced by good ones. The results show that under general conditions, there will be an unlimited increase in the inventory between the two stations for any failure rate. The implications for the adoption of just-in-time inventory methods are discussed.
