Queen or country?
Article Abstract:
The majority of Australians now favour the country becoming a republic, though Prime Minister John Howard is strongly in favour of the monarchy. The opposition Labor Party is calling for a republic to be established by 2001, while the ruling Liberal party promised before the 1996 elections to allow the people to decide this issue at a people's convention in Dec 1997. There is a growing feeling that Australia should have its own head of state, rather than one appointed by the UK. Anti-monarchist sentiment is underpinned by a lessening of trade links between the two countries as Australia boosts its trade with Asia while the UK increases its trade ties to Europe.

Street wise
Article Abstract:
Sydney City Council is going to privatise its street structures, such as bus shelters, rubbish bins, park benches and toilets. The winner of the bid will be able to sell advertising space on the structures. Kerry Packer and Rupert Murdoch have both entered designs and the winner will be known in December 1997. The designs must comply with safety standards, as well as being practical, safe, long-lasting and able to cope with very sunny weather. Sydney wants its streets to look good for the year 2000 Olympic Games which it is hosting.
