Guangzhou's municipal government is planning strategies to make the region more economically competitive. Also known as Canton, the city is one of the wealthiest in China. Plans include urban renewal, encouraging foreign investment and entrepreneurism, and privatization. Several industrial sectors are targeted for development, such as chemical, steel and automobile manufacturing.

Riding out the storm
Article Abstract:
Businesses in Shenzhen, China report little impact on the financial crisis effecting Southeast Asia. The government is approving about five foreign investment projects a week and construction and infrastructure projects are evident throughout the region. Some foreign investments are threatened by the financial turmoil in Asia, but in 1997 foreign investment grew 18.6%.
