Weighty problem: wrestler's remarks spark new US-Japan row
Article Abstract:
Konishiki, a non-Japanese sumo wrestler, has been trying to grapple with possible reasons as to why he has not yet been named yokuzuna, or grand champion of Japan's national sport. Weighing 264 kg, the 28-year old Konishiki has already attainedozeki rank, the highest level so far reached by a foreign sumo wrestler. His speculation that his not being designated yokuzuna has roots in racial discrimination has fueled a controversy begun by an article against foreign yokuzuna written by historian Noboru Kojima.
