Merrill Lynch has been attracted to the Japanese market where a large amount of savings earns a low rate of return, and deregulation has made it easier for outsiders to enter the financial services industry. Merrill Lynch Japan Securities has been set up and employs 2,000 staff previously at Yamaichi. The company uses local staff and sells Japanese products. Methods employed at Yamaichi such as churning, which did not help customers, have been changed.
