REAL ESTATE SLUMP REACHES CALCUTTA
Article Abstract:
The downswing in the real estate sector has reached Calcutta after Mumbai and Bangalore. According to estimates, about 350,000 square feet of commercial property is without takers. The demand for both commercial and residential properties has reduced drastically. Apartments built for mid income and high income groups have found no takers with only a marginal demand for low income type of housing. The downtrend is apparent in the decline of disbursals of the housing finance companies. The slump is attributed to the slowdown in economic activity in West Bengal coupled with the fear that bigger corportes may shift base from the city. (uh)

CITY'S TOP-END RENTAL MARKET LIES LISTLESS
Article Abstract:
The rental business in Bangalore at the premium end is witnessing a fall in demand. According to the Feroze Estate Agency, enquiries for high budget apartments or individual bungalows (above Rs30,000 per month) have declined. In the past two years, the rentals of individual houses which earlier quoted for Rs1 lakh a month has declined by 20-35 percent. Recession has affected the budget allocation for housing by companies. There are only 4-5 deals for high budget rentals a month. Corporates prefer self contained flats with all amenities to individual houses due to high security and maintenance costs. (rk)(vr)

Article Abstract:
A study conducted by the Institute of Development and Planning Studies (IDPS) has revealed a distorted distribution of land in the district of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The distortion is due to the rise in the brackish water aquaculture industry. According to the study, the growth in shrimp culture has resulted in an increase in corporate and private capital. This has led to an increase in shrimp farming resulting in many social and economic irregularities. (ag)
