Race for kindergartens
Article Abstract:
Intense competition for kindergarten and primary school slots contributes to the great demand for pre-school cram schools in Japan. Acceptance into so-called 'escalator' kindergartens and primary schools virtually assures a child's graduation from a prestigious secondary school and university. As such, parents are obsessed with getting their children accepted into these escalator schools. 'Juku,' or cram schools, prepare Japanese pre-school children for the rigorous entrance exams of such escalator schools.

A dying breed
Article Abstract:
Japanese workers are known for their obsessive work habits. Although there have been efforts to reduce the number of annual average working hours in Japan, the 2,052 hours a Japanese worker puts into work every year is higher by 100-200 hours from the annual average working hours of workers in Western countries. Japan is hoping to cut the average annual working hours to 1,800 by 1995. Estimates put the number of Japanese workers who die from overwork each year at 10,000.
