Second coming: Awami league set to take power
Article Abstract:
Bangladesh's second parliamentary elections in 1996 gave the Awami League a plurality with 134 of the 273 seats announced, with expectations of an alliance with the 29-seat Jatiya Party. Observers expect the results to lead to a functioning government, unlike the February polls. Sheikh Hasina Wajed, head of the League, criticized President Abdur Rahman Biswas's failure to promptly ask her to form a government and accused him of participating in a conspiracy to block her from power.

Fingers crossed
Article Abstract:
Shinepukur Jute Spinners will challenge the Dhaka stockmarket with an upcoming rights issue giving shareholders 125 shares for each one they now hold. The company hopes to raise $62.5 million for an investment in Bangladesh's first Hyatt Regency as part of a diversification plan. The issue, announced Dec 25, will significantly influence the exchange, which has only $1 billion in capitalization. Dhaka's index doubled last year and may be too fragile to bear such a large issue.
