Ramos asserts leadership as host of APEC conference
Article Abstract:
Philippine Pres. Fidel Ramos urges its fellow Southeast Asian leaders into enhancing their plans for market-opening measures as he hosts the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Manila and Subic Bay in Nov. 1996. Ramos directed his appeal to all 18 heads of state who are part of the APEC even as fears abound that the forum will fail to produce concrete results. The Philippine leader is also exhorting members of the Assn. of Southeast Asian Nations into opening the Asean Free Trade Area to all countries to serve as an example to APEC officials.

Can Asean recapture its effectiveness and utility?
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of the Asean has become questionable since the economic crisis that grips the region has revealed weaknesses in its spirit. Previously, the organization was noted for its ability to foster regional cooperation in an area that was divided by language, culture, race, religion, history and geography. After a year into the economic crisis, however, the member countries have shown their inability to handle deteriorating external and internal conditions.
