Rapid reaction: Hongkong firm finds a niche selling personal security

Applied International Holdings, an original-equipment manufacturer of consumer electronics, has grown rapidly by marketing products that protect people against crime. Under Managing Dir Raymond Hung, Applied's net profits went up 148% and its sales went up 145% in the first half of 1993 in line with Hung's goal of making Applied the world's third largest network marketer. Hung established Quorum International, a direct-sales network, to handle Applied's marketing, a decision that opened the way to increased sales and a diversified product line. Hung launched Applied in 1975.

Opting for options: Hongkong punters await new way to make money
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong is making an effort to introduce option contracts as potential sources of investment. Options are derivatives that give investors the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell at a fixed price and date. The Hang Seng Index Options is viewed by trade officials as an 'important addition' to the derivatives market of Hong Kong. Despite a number of skeptical traders, analysts predict that option contracts will be very appealing to institutions, fund managers and individuals seeking leverage in the equities market.

The great give-away: Hongkong budget cuts taxes and boosts spending
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong Finance Sec Hamish McLeod disclosed significant reforms in the budget for FY 1993-1994 in his speech on Mar 3, 1993. The budget proposals included a total increase of 33% to$19.8 billion with capital works and social services getting the big slices of the budget pie. Enticing 90% tax cuts on Hong Kong's salaried employees, with full exemption of 25,000 people, and on indirect taxes related to business and consumers were also proposed.
