Rapping in Malaysia: teenagers mob shows but songs are banned from airwaves
Article Abstract:
The Malaysian rap group 4U2C is extremely popular with Malaysian teenagers, but the country's state-run radio and television deny them air time. The government allows the group to perform, and to sell tapes and compact discs, but publicly disapproves of their image. The group, which raps in the Malay language, insists that its values are wholesome, and that it is not simply emulating decadent Western culture. The popularity of the group has spread to Singapore, and may spread to Indonesia as well, due to a language similarity between the two countries.

Try again later: politics delays Thai telephone award
Article Abstract:
Apparent political maneuvering led Thailand's cabinet on Aug 22, 1995 to reject a bid by TelecomAsia and Thai Telephone & Telecommunications to install 1.1 million telephone lines. Industry Minister Chaiwat Sinsuwong, who led the critics of the bid, is a member of the Palang Dharma Party, led by Deputy Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Until recently he chaired the Shinawatra Group, which is eager to enter the fixed-line business. This and poor 2nd-quarter earnings in the telecoms sector concern some analysts.
