Singapore-Malaysia ties strained: debate on re-merger sharpens focus on their differences
Article Abstract:
A debate on a possible re-merger between Singapore and Malaysia has led to tension between the two countries. Singapore joined the Malaysian federation for two years to 1965. Lee Kuan Yew, senior minister of Singapore, argued that a re-merger could be possible in a statement in Jun 1996. A poll commissioned after this statement showed opposition from 60% of Singaporeans to the possibility of reunification. Malaysia has taken offense at remarks by Tony Tan, Singapore's deputy prime minister, that Singapore seeks to promote a meritocracy and racial harmony and this is shown by its rejection of a re-merger.

Taiwan is drafting legislation to govern ties with Hongkong
Article Abstract:
Taiwan is preparing a new law to clarify relations with Hongkong after China takes control from the UK in 1997. Legal experts are writing the draft legislation under contract with Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC). Moreover, the establishment of the Dept of Hongkong and Macau Affairs as a part of MAC in 1991 testified to Hongkong's increasing importance to Taiwan. The Hongkong Government has mostly downplayed its relations with Taiwan to avoid offending China, but Taiwan's new contacts with the mainland may allow for improved opportunities for Taiwan in Hongkong.

Can Estrada govern?
Article Abstract:
New Philippines President Joseph Estrada is keen to present himself as a man of the people and to emphasize how he differs from former President Fidel Ramos. He has made a number of mistakes in the early weeks of his administration, but it is too soon to dismiss him as ineffective. He must now ensure that he is seen to be taking steps to help the poor, who showed strong support for him. If he loses the support of the poor, then he will no longer have a power base.
