Research by economists shows that the manufacturing capacity of Britain has remained at a high level during the current recession. Consequently, a sudden increase in imports and a high current-account deficit will not occur when a recovery takes place.

Economists forecast a 1% growth rate for the gross domestic product in 1993, but the GDP has not changed and lower interest rates have had no effect. Lax fiscal and monetary policy and sterling devaluation will eventually spur growth.
