Article Abstract:
Asian economies should start to recover with a revival of demand in 1999. The problems of Asian economies are lined to a drop in demand in the region, so external events may not be as significant as might first appear. There are still problems such as a lack of good borrowers for banks, since companies seeking funds tend to represent too much of a risk. Companies could face problems from lack of working capital, and this could hamper recovery. Bank reform is needed but South Korea is one of the few countries where it is being carried out seriously.

The case for global finance
Article Abstract:
There is increased support for restrictions on global capital flows with the Asian financial crisis, and problems in Russian financial markets. Such restrictions may initially appear attractive, but they will cause financial distortions. Banks should avoid imprudent foreign currency short-term liabilities, but bank supervision is a different issue from capital flows being restricted. Inadequate supervision is one cause of the financial crisis in Asia, and the Asian banking industry should be cleaned up.
