A very Birtish coup
Article Abstract:
Controversial John Birt, director-general of the British Broadcasting Corp., has achieved a great deal since he started with the organization in 1987. Birt has improved economies behind the scenes, so that more could be spent on television production. Under his guidance, the BBC has lured audiences from ITV and Channel 4. And Birt has maintained the unity of the BBC when the government sought to drastically change the organization. Detractors believe he has mis-managed the company, and say that the BBC would have been much better under different leadership.

The dirt on Birt
Article Abstract:
BBC's free-lance arrangement with director-general John Birt, by which salaries were paid to John Birt Productions, was legal if embarrassing; his expenses are more questionable. Chmn Marmaduke Hussey is culpable for approving Birt's contract and keeping it secret.
