A planned $380 million thermal energy project in China's Guangdong province should help fill the high demand for electricity in the region. Electrical power supply shortage resulted from a sharp increase of both industrial utilization and consumer use of electrical appliances. The project represents a major part of regional plans to increase electricity supply through the construction and operation of hydroelectric and thermal plants. Guangdong 'sfacility will be financed by New World Development and the Guangzhou Economic Construction Development Co.

Malaysian entrepreneur Quek Leng Chan has been purchasing diverse businesses and has brought in two powerful shareholders for Hong Kong's Guoco Group in preparation for its bid to take over the Overseas Trust Bank which will be auctioned by the colony's government. The purchases are also in keeping with the plan for Guoco to concentrate on financial services, manufacturing and property as core businesses. The company has shown strong profit growth as its manufacturing and property businesses have begun to increase earnings.

Bottom line: Japanese diaper maker profits with new product
Article Abstract:
Uni-Charm, the leading Japanese manufacturer of diapers and sanitary napkins, secured 30% of Japan's $1.2 billion diaper market by coming out with a line of disposable paper underpants for toddlers in 1991. This innovative product has helped Uni-Charm to reap a 368% increase in unconsolidated net income and an 18.9% rise in revenue in the year ending Mar 31, 1994. However, to keep ahead of its main rivals, Japan-based Kao and US-based Proctor & Gamble, Uni-Charm's executives are planning to expand into other Asian markets.
