Reconstructing the heart of a Medieval city
Article Abstract:
Architectural firms CZWG and Kraaijvanger Urbis worked together for five years on the De Barones project, which involved the restructuring of a large, partially derelict site in the Medieval centre of Breda, Netherlands. CZWG was specifically responsible for designing the arterial shopping mall that connects all the various elements of the scheme. The mall is made up of a series of six linked rooms, each with a glazed steel truss roof to filter the light. The integration of the city library was the key to the concept used by CZWG for the design of the mall.

The idea was to promote the relationship between Islam and Christianity and Rome was the ideal centre for the building. The finished building can hold up to 2,000 worshippers, and also contains prayer halls, meeting places, conference auditoria, and offices. There is also space for a large Islamic library.
