Reed Elsevier's outlook depresses stock

Reed Elsevier PLC posted a decline of 10% in its pretax profits for the first-half of 1999. The announcement ended hopes for a rapid reversal of the company's performance. Reed Elsevier also forecasted a cautious view for the second-half of the year. The company posted 371 million pound sterling (558.5 million euros) in the period. During the same period in 1998, Reed Elsevier posted 413 million pound sterling.

Pearson pretax profit for 2002 jumped 36%
