Shell's net tumbles 53%, sending its stock lower

Royal Dutch/Shell Group posted a decline in net income of 53% for the 1998 fourth quarter. The company also wrote off $4.39 billion for restructuring and other charges. In addition, Royal Dutch's share value dropped on stock exchanges in Europe as a result of the 53% fall in net income. The company's net income dropped to $818 million in the quarter, compared to 1.74 billion during the same period in 1997.
