Reforms appear imperiled by Beijing's coyness on WTO
Article Abstract:
China's failure to get approval for its application of membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) would have dire economic results for the country. This scenario is being contemplated by Western economists and Chinese policymakers following the absence of substantial talks between China and the US, Canada and the European Union which are posing objections to its entry in the WTO. In the event that China does not make it to the WTO in 1999, it would mean a slowdown in long-term economic development. In addition, economic reforms taking place would be bogged down by delays.

A Tough Sell: The Gateway to Kazakstan
Article Abstract:
In 1997 foreign direct investment in Mongolia produced less than 1% of the country's gross domestic product. Foreign investors often face conflicting government policies and high taxation, but many Mongolian advisors now say their country is a bastion of democracy that will be a regional center for financial and high-tech services, and the e-commerce gateway to Kazakstan.
