Regulations expected to boost number of bad loans
Article Abstract:
The new rules which will be implemented in January 1998 will increase the levels of bad loans reported by Thai banks, according to Thai Farmers Bank President Banthoon Lamsam. The new rules will require banks to consider any loans which have not been paid for six months as nonperforming. Banks will also be called to make loan-loss provisions for a portion of the loans. Many Thai banks do not want to disclose their bad loan portfolios because they are afraid that such reports would scare investors. However, the lack of disclosure has reduced confidence in the stock market and the whole financial system.

Taiwan's banking industry is heading for consolidation
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's hunt for a new investor for troubled Taichung Business Bank may be the beginning of a critical trend in the island's banking industry, fewer parties. Several banking executives stated that the most possible buyer must be another bank instead of a major industrial firm or team of firms searching to obtain its own lender. Reported wrongdoing at the company reveals the country may not control its banks closely enough to deter a major stockholder from misallocating depositors' funds.
