Rehabilitating orang utans: Sumatran centre prepares unwanted pets for life in the wild
Article Abstract:
Bohorok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre in northern Sumatra receives discarded pet orang utans and then trains them to survive in the wild. To date the centre has succeeded in getting 179 former pets to join the 2,000 to 3,000 wild orang utans already inhabiting the Mount Leuser reserve that surrounds the centre. The adorable appearance of baby orang utans has deluded many people, particularly in Taiwan, into believing wrongly that these apes make good pets. The centre is helping to undo the harm wrought by the smuggling operation that has sprung up due to this mistaken idea.
