Reorientation process: new US secretary of state outlines Asia policy
Article Abstract:
Incoming Pres Bill Clinton has to address several international issues which outgoing Pres George Bush was not able to resolve. Initial glimpses into how the Clinton Administration will handle foreign policy issues were evident during the confirmation hearings for Sec of State nominee Warren Christopher. Since Clinton never outlined his policy regarding Asia during the campaign, Asian diplomats in the US are scrutinizing Christopher's statements in the confirmation hearings for clues. Pledging allegiance
Article Abstract:

To policymakers, the pursuit of democracy and human rights has become a reflection of American values besides being vital to US interests. Previous allies, such as Japan, are now being cited for their lack of interest in the promotion of human rights and democracy in the region.
