Retail renaissance
Article Abstract:
Eaton's of Canada Ltd is being reestablished under new leadership. Once a lumbering chain of around 100 outlets in every corner of Canada, it is reclaiming its former glory under the guidance of Sears Canada, which acquired it in 1999. Eaton's is opening seven urban stores that are spacious, upscale specialty boutiques that will operate in city centers and target downtown residents. Despite its declarations of finding a niche, however, its decision to cater to every consumer's tastes and price differences indicates tha it has not achieved focus.

What's in the cards?
Article Abstract:
Bid.com International Inc is presently re-evaluating its financial strategies following a consistent decline in its stock price. Formerly known as Internet Liquidators International and based in Missisauga, Ontario, bid.com originally established its business around three business-to-business consumer auctions for the Canadian, American and European markets, and marketed itself as a licensor of e-commerce technology. However, the company remains unprofitable and was compelled to reduce its 1999 revenue target from C$50 million to C$30 million.

Drugstore chains are feeling no pain
Article Abstract:
Shoppers Drug Mart, a Toronto, Canada-based drugstore chain and its retail pharmacy counterparts seem unaffected by the entry of mass merchandisers and grocery chains into the drugstore market. Karabus Consulting Inc. Chair Albert Plant believes retail chains do not have to worry much about discounters such as Wal-Mart Canada, which he expects to enter over-the-counter sales. Plant argues that through the years retail pharmacies have controlled the market of prescription drug sales and relationship-building with customers.
