Retreading the old boards
Article Abstract:
The construction of company boards of directors has been under discussion and agreement has been reached on some general rules. The most important part of the agreement is that board members, as representatives of stockholders, should not be part of the management team apart from the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The Chairman should never be the CEO as this may cause conflict especially if the CEO is unsatisfactory and needs to be reprimanded or dismissed. Members of boards should be paid only in stock to ensure that any decisions are made in the interest of company profitability.

While the eagle slept: After World War II, the US basked in an economic golden age
Article Abstract:
The golden age for US companies was between 1947 and 1987. Industry was driven by major government defence spending, and, after a brief post-war inflation, prices stabilized and inflation virtually ceased to exist for almost 30 years. The end of the golden age was particularly apparent in the automobile industry as Japanese companies increasingly gained market share. In other sectors too, the new competitors were mostly Japanese, and it came as a shock that many foreign companies had developed more effective management models than US companies.

The election that's already won
Article Abstract:
US business leaders believe that they will benefit, whatever the outcome of the forthcoming presidential election. This is surprising, given that the economy will be a key issue in the campaigning, which would usually prompt businesses to strongly prefer one candidate to another. A government headed by Republican candidate Bob Dole would be better for businesses in practice, but economic policy has moved so far to the right over recent years that businesses have no real need to be concerned about a Clinton victory.
