It specializes in risk management on an enormous scale, and, despite executive protestations that it is not a hedge fund, it both operates and is structured like one.

Get a grip: can Thailand's central bank handle the baht crisis?
Article Abstract:
The Bank of Thailand has managed to defend the baht from currency speculators, but it needs to take steps to restore the financial sector. The bank will have to assert its independence and the new governor, Rerngchai Marakanond is aiming to restore the damaged organisation and encourage a team spirit. New initiatives include calling on banks to provide for so-called doubtful loans, the creation of increased capital requirements for the finance companies and the setting up of a property bailout fund to provide liquidity to finance companies.

Lender beware
Article Abstract:
Various bankers in Japan, Europe, and the US are under fire, or anxiously awaiting the outcome of litigation. Singapore's Ministry of Finance on Oct 15, 1995, sharply criticized Barings over its supervision of Nicholas Leeson. Daiwa bank officials are trying to explain why they delayed telling US authorities about Toshihide Iguchi's losses, while Japan's Ministry of Finance denies involvement. These and various other actions indicate the importance of due diligence in internal operations and in dealing with clients.
