Tale of two banks
Article Abstract:
Bank Nisp is a small Indonesian bank, while Bank Danamon is a large bank which has grown rapidly, only to be affected by nonperforming loans. The Indonesian central bank, Bank Indonesia, has issued capital requirement guidelines that have to be adhered to by Dec 1998. These guidelines could create problems for Bank Nisp, because it is small, although it is financially strong. The central bank appears to be rewarding foreign banks, though they could have contributed to Indonesia's debt problems.

The clean-up continues
Article Abstract:
India's banking system seems on paper to be much healthier than last year thanks to reforms to increase transparency, meet intl standards, and provide for bad debt. The boom in non-banking finance companies is coinciding with a slump in the capital markets to promise a shake-out. The nationalized banks that still dominate the sector now show healthier balance sheets, but that may be in part due to $3.29 billion they received from the govt, then lent back to it at a profitable 10% interest.
