Ripples in the pool
Article Abstract:
The largest UK companies have been able to choose their electricity supplier since 1990. The open market extended to include smaller companies in 1994. The opening of the market has been a popular move, but organizations have found a number of problems following the pioneering step. Customers have complained about steep rises in fixed charges, systems problems led to a long period of inaccurate billing which had a legacy of unresolved situations, and some analysts complain that UK pool prices are around 15% too high.

Is the world in safe hands?
Article Abstract:
Market-oriented policies have come to predominate world wide as regulations are eased and monopolies are broken up. Corporate organization is undergoing major changes and information technology is a driving force. Public opinion on these changes depends on a number of factors such as whether the system delivers, whether it is fair, and whether national identity is upheld. Environmental concerns have also become important, and stresses arising from demographic change also have to be tackled.
