Rocks and a hard place: forgotten China immigrant ship rusts off Thailand
Article Abstract:
The ship Gina III has stayed on a beach in Thailand since 1992 when it ran aground, purportedly while carrying 300 illegal Chinese immigrants to the US. At least 10 other such ships are known to have smuggled 1,500 illegal immigrants from China to the US since Sep 1991, with each immigrant paying $25-30,000 to the criminal gangs that run the smuggling operations. Immigrants, many of whom come from Fujian province, often go to work for these gangs after arriving in the US, Canada or Australia. Most immigrants are not trying to escape poverty despite what is commonly thought.

Collateral Damage: Laos's dependence on Thailand becomes a liability
Article Abstract:
Laos is particularly vulnerable to any deterioration in the Thai economy, as Thailand was the larges foreign investor in the country between 19988 and 1996. Laos was also the favoured recipient of Thai aid, but the Thai International Cooperation Programme budget is to be cut, affecting private Thai businesses, the major source of foreign investment in Laos. Laos needs to reduce dependence on imported products and begin production of basic consumer products, according to foreign economists.
