Long way from a home: housing programme can't keep up with demand
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's popular public-housing program will face unprecedented demands over the coming five years and may be swamped following the colony's 1997 reversion to Chinese control. Many families already wait a decade for the low-cost housing, which has aided some 2.6 million of Hong Kong's 6 million residents. The Housing Authority plans to build 141,000 apartments by 2001, but that barely meets existing demand, and many predict more than 100,000 mainlanders will also soon seek housing. Rent has also soared since 1989.

A day in the life: it's drab, dull, hungry and cold
Article Abstract:
Letters from residents of North Korea, such as the approximately 1,800 Japanese women who have been there since the late 1950s when they left Japan with their Korean husbands, indicate the harsh economic conditions in North Korea. Shortages of food and consumer goods are chronic and severe. Many North Koreans eat only one or two meals a day, while the daily rice ration has been reduced to 100-200 grams. Power outages are likewise common, forcing many industries to run at half capacity.

Petite lady lawyer fights sex harassment
Article Abstract:
For several years Mizuho Fukushima has been Japan's foremost opponent of sexual harassment. Since 1988 she has handled two cases in court and settled 20 outside of court, while providing advice to the public. In a nation notorious for its sexism she has been a prominent voice, and sometimes a target. Her family background was supportive but made her aware of the problems of poor and working class people. She also champions foreign workers' rights.
