Roll-your-own CDs roll on
Article Abstract:
There have been moves to control the bootlegging of musical recordings through the internet. Pirate audio has spread through 'MP3' music files, and free software is available that allows website visitors to play the music. A cheap MP3 player is selling well, and allows users to store tracks and play them through a personal stereo. Diamond Multimedia Systems is benefiting from strong demand, and other companies plan similar products. Meanwhile, the industry has persuaded major consumer electronics companies to put encryption circuitry in digital recorders, preventing serial copies from being made. A Secure Digital Music Initiative is also planned.

A new song
Article Abstract:
The Internet has become a new distribution channel for recorded music, and technology should help companies to protect their copyright, so reduce the amount of piracy. Record companies can cut distribution and manufacturing costs and the price of music is also likely to fall. Record stores will have to seek a new role, as will record companies, which will no longer produce and distribute CDs. They will face competition from agents and others in marketing artists, and will have to learn to become more popular.
