Article Abstract:
Hotels in Hong Kong suffer from a pernicious myth that all rooms have long been booked for the July 1, 1997, handover of the British colony to Chinese control. However, though bookings have been taken for the event since the 1980s, the hotels may not manage to rent every room, though those they do fill may require a five- or six-night stay at a cost of $1,560 to $10,650. Many requests are for rooms with lucky numbers or colors or a special view. The politics of the handover can also complicate usually routine questions.

Article Abstract:
Indian-Americans own 46% of motels and other US economy lodgings, and the Patel family of Meridian, Mississippi, is an example of the older wave of Indian migrants. Suresh Patel acquired the motel in 1989, investing nearly $50,000 in refurbishment and repairs. He sought an education for his children in the US, and his son is studying to be a physician. He seeks to maintain links with the Indian community and does not mix a great deal with Americans outside business relations.

Article Abstract:
The Intercontinental Hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka is struggling to operate in the face of Sri Lanka's long-running civil war. A suicidal truck bomb detonated by the Tamil Tigers down the street from the hotel killed 91 people and inflicted major damage upon the hotel. Management has been able to reopen 70 of the hotel's 250 rooms and is attempting to attract business by offering reduced rates and more frequent-flyer miles for clients.
