Rough and ready
Article Abstract:
Miriam Defensor-Santiago, candidate in the 1992 Philippine presidential elections, has been leading most surveys since last year with a rating of about 20%. Her amazing popularity rests on her graft-buster reputation from her days as head of the Commission on Immigration and Deportation, and she has actually centered her campaign on anti-graft and corruption issues. Ironically, she is facing two charges of corruption in the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court, while her husband was removed from his customs job during a 1990 cleanup of the notoriously corrupt customs bureau.

Succession struggle
Article Abstract:
Fidel Ramos has stated categorically that he has no intention of seeking a second term as president of the Philippines. However, there is widespread concern that he may indeed make such an attempt. This has prompted senators to vote to remove Neptali Gonzalez, a strong supporter of Ramos, from his position as president of the upper house. This would ensure that Ramos will not be able to use Congress to make the necessary constitutional changes to allow him to run for a second term, but will likely prevent the passage of other reforms, such as economic reforms.

Who's afraid of Erap?
Article Abstract:
Filipino presidential candidate Joseph Estrada has gained widespread support among ordinary people as a result of having promoted himself mainly on the basis of identifying with the poor. He has based his campaign around tackling poverty, and ordinary people seem to believe that he will keep his promises. Business leaders and foreign investors are now becoming concerned that Estrada will win the presidential election in May 1998, as they feel that his commitment to helping the poor will have a negative impact on the Filipino economy.
